Frequently Asked Questions
- Q: What is
MediaTech?
A: The goal of the MIT Sloan
MediaTech Club is to provide the link between the students at the MIT
Sloan School of Management and business leaders in the fields of media
and technology. With more than 400 members, the MediaTech Club is the
largest student organization at the MIT Sloan School. During the past
two years, the club brought more than 100 speakers to campus and
organized many "TechTreks," where students went to visit media and
technology companies around the world, including trips to Silicon
Valley, New York City, Asia, Austin, Seattle and the Greater Boston
area.
- Q: What are
these things called "TechTreks"?
A: Each year, MediaTech organizes and
runs MIT Sloan's renowned "TechTreks," which have received national
press coverage. Over the past two years, more than 500 Sloan students
visited more than 200 companies around the globe. These trips, which
are entirely student-organized, bring students to the top media and
technology companies in the world. Groups of 10-20 students each visit
7-20 companies during a typical Trek. Company visits usually include a
meeting with top management to discuss the current strategic issues
facing the company and the industry, and a plant tour, if appropriate.
Over the past couple of years, TechTreks went to the following regions:
- Silicon Valley
- Greater Boston/Massachusetts
- New York
- Asia – including Taiwan and Hong Kong
- India
- Scandinavia – including Finland, Sweden,
Norway, and Iceland
- Austin
- Washington DC
- Miami
- Seattle
- Q: What are
MediaTech SIGs?
A: SIGs are MediaTech's Special
Interest Groups. The SIGs are an opportunity for club members to focus
in on a specific industry. They bring in leaders specialized in those
industries for focused talks and small group lunches. Areas currently
represented include Enterprise Software, Wireless &
Internetworking, and Game Tycoons.
- Q: Who are
the Elected MediaTech Officers?
A: MediaTech elections are held
annually in February. A list of the current officers can be found on
the About Us: Officers section.
- Q: What has
MediaTech done lately?
A: One of the two core activities of
the MediaTech Club is the Executive Speaker Series. The Executive
Speaker Series brings leaders in the media and technology industries to
Sloan to speak to students. Speakers usually present to a large group
of students, followed by smaller group interactions that promote
dialogue and discussion of the top issues facing media and technology
executives today.
Speakers range from industry leaders and pioneers, to self-made
entrepreneurs, to the people responsible for building the hottest new
companies with the latest technology. Some of the more than 100
speakers that MediaTech has hosted recently include:
- Jen-Hsun Huang, Co-founder and CEO of NVIDIA
- Shai Agassi, President, Product and
Technology Group, SAP
- Kal Raman, SVP of Amazon.com
- Michael Armstrong, Chairman of Comcast,
former CEO of AT&T
- Robin Chase, Founder and CEO of ZipCar
- Michael Dell, Founder and CEO of Dell
Computers
- Robert Friedman, VP of Corporate Marketing
for AOL-TimeWarner
- Dr. Irwin Jacobs, Chairman of Qualcomm
- Jeff Raikes, Group Vice President at
Microsoft
- Ray Stata, Founder of Analog Devices
The club hosts executives and business professionals from all levels of
the organization. Talks range in content from company overviews,
strategy discussions, career advice from an executive and the marketing
strategy of a recent product launch. The MediaTech Club brings three
types of speakers to MIT Sloan: the people in the jobs that our members
want, the people who can hire our members for those jobs, and the
people who hold the "C-level" executive jobs that our members aspire to
obtain long-term.
- Q: How do I
join MediaTech?
A: You must be a Sloan student to
join. To become a member, simply leave a check for $30 made out to:
"MIT Sloan MediaTech Club" in Anthony Garcia's folder in the main lobby
of E52. This will cover dues for 2 years.
